Blue Ridge is a comfortable drive from Atlanta (about 90 miles), Chattanooga (about 85 miles) and Knoxville (about 115 miles), which makes it a natural Friday-to-Sunday trip. This plan keeps driving short, mixes one "big" activity with plenty of downtime, and works for both couples and families. Swap pieces in and out using the seasonal notes at the end.
Friday evening: arrive and settle in
- Groceries first. If your cabin is out on Aska Road, toward Mineral Bluff or in Cherry Log, shop before you leave the main highway. Gravel roads after dark are more relaxing with everything already in the car.
- Easy dinner downtown or at the cabin, then hot tub or fire pit time.
- Check tomorrow's conditions: weather, and if you're planning river time, the TVA Blue Ridge release schedule.
Saturday: train, twin towns and downtown
Morning: Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway departs the historic depot at 241 Depot Street for a 26-mile round trip along the Toccoa River to McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. There are two formats:
- Extended (about 4 hours): includes a roughly 2-hour layover in McCaysville/Copperhill to eat, shop and stand with one foot in each state.
- Express (about 2 hours): a round trip with no layover, offered on select dates.
The railway's 2026 operating schedule shows 10 a.m. departures (4-hour trips) on operating days, with some dates adding a 3 p.m. departure. Fall foliage dates sell out fast, so buy tickets directly on the railway's site as soon as your dates are set. You can bring snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a small cooler that fits under your seat; outside alcohol isn't allowed. Boxed lunches can be added, and a concession car sells drinks and snacks.
Families: the 2-hour express (when offered) is the easier fit for younger kids. Couples: the extended trip with lunch in McCaysville makes a relaxed half day.
Summer alternative: tube the Toccoa

From roughly late spring through summer, outfitters in McCaysville run tubing trips on the Toccoa River. For example, Toccoa River Tubing lists a 1.5-mile float of about 1.5 hours with shuttle and life jackets. The water is cold (it comes from the bottom of the dam), so bring water shoes and a dry layer. Confirm operating days, age/height rules and pricing directly with the outfitter.
Afternoon: downtown Blue Ridge
Back in town, spend the afternoon on foot: browse the shops and restaurants around the depot and pick up the Fannin County Chamber's visitor info (Visitor Center: 152 Orvin Lance Drive, Suite A). Downtown is compact, so park once and walk.
Evening: dinner and (seasonally) the drive-in
The Swan Drive-In on Summit Street has been showing movies since 1955 and is one of Georgia's few remaining drive-ins. It's a fun family night or date night. Check its site for the season, showtimes and payment details.
Sunday: waterfall, orchard and lake
Morning: a short waterfall hike
Fall Branch Falls is the easiest "real waterfall" near town: about 0.9 mile round trip on the Benton MacKaye Trail with about 200 feet of climbing, ending at an observation deck facing a double cascade. The trailhead is on gravel Stanley Creek/Rock Creek Road, which is fine for most cars in normal conditions. Full details and more options are in our easy hikes and waterfalls guide.
Have a high-clearance vehicle and want something more memorable? Swap in the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, a 270-foot footbridge reached by a short walk from the end of rough Forest Service Road 816.
Late morning: Mercier Orchards

Mercier Orchards (8660 Blue Ridge Drive) is a family-run orchard founded in 1943 with a market and bakery. Think fried pies, cider and apples to take home. Its posted market hours are Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Friday–Sunday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and it closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Easter. U-pick runs seasonally (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and apples; apples usually August–October, depending on the weather). Call 706-632-3411 or check the U-pick page for what's available. Fall weekends get very busy, so arrive early.
Afternoon: Lake Blue Ridge, then head home
In warm months, finish at Morganton Point Recreation Area on Lake Blue Ridge, a Forest Service site with a designated swimming beach and picnic tables (day-use fee; check current hours and rates). In cooler months, skip the swim and enjoy the lake views, then start the drive home before Sunday traffic peaks.
